“When people think about the Volvo Ocean Race, all they think about is the actual sailing,” observes Nick Bice, Director of Boats and Maintenance. “But there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes during the race to ensure that if they start the race they actually finish it.” At each stopover, he explains, the boats are lifted out of the water and placed in a cradle to allow for maintenance. Because it’s about eight meters from the keel to the top of the boat, Riwal provides each team with a ten-meter lift.“This is the first time we’ve done this,” continues Bice. “Previously we relied on local resources, but in some cities, we found that the materials handling equipment was a bit hit-and-miss, so we wanted to eliminate the potential of any sort of work stoppage due to equipment not being available. That’s why we’ve gone with a reputable company like Riwal. We’ve had the equipment in Lisbon since last July, and to date, it’s gone like clockwork, with no failures. Riwal has also supplied us with valuable training and will continue to support us throughout the race.”
